How to raise your prices without losing customers, and why competing on price is a race to the bottom.
The Race to the Bottom
Competing primarily on price is the fastest way to destroy a local service business. There will always be someone willing to do it cheaper, usually by cutting corners or operating without proper insurance. To build a healthy, scalable business, you must transition from competing on price to competing on value.
Communicating Value Effectively
Customers don't inherently know the difference between a $500 job and a $1,000 job. It is your marketing's responsibility to educate them. Your website and sales process must clearly articulate why your service commands a premium.
- Highlight Guarantees: Offer robust, no-hassle warranties. People will pay more for peace of mind.
- Showcase Expertise: Display your certifications, licenses, and years of experience prominently.
- Premium Presentation: From the design of your website to the cleanliness of your technicians' uniforms, every touchpoint must scream "premium quality."
Implementing Good-Better-Best Pricing
Never present a single price option. Implement a tiered "Good, Better, Best" pricing model. This shifts the customer's mindset from "Should I hire them?" to "Which option should I choose?" The middle "Better" option usually becomes the most popular, naturally increasing your average ticket size.
"Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. If customers are complaining about price, you haven't demonstrated enough value."
How to Raise Prices Successfully
When raising prices, over-communicate the added value. Grandfather in loyal, long-term customers for a period, but apply the new pricing to all new leads immediately. If you raise your prices by 15% and lose 10% of your price-shopping customers, you are still making more profit while doing less work.
